Service Dog Legacy

by Brenda Surin

I close my eyes and

see your face looking up at me –

those amber eyes so clear and calm

Your love washes over me and

my racing heart begins to slow …

You gently ease

next to me

Your soft muzzle

resting on the painful side of my head …

I feel your chest rise and fall

my breathing syncs with yours

The pain begins to lose it’s grip

my body eases into rest …

This is just a memory

I know this all to well

But memories live forever

and love has no bounds …

Your quiet visits strengthen me

A bright reminder of our journey

To make me strong

and fierce

and not afraid

To rise up and fight another day …
